I guess today's the 10th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain. Not the day he was found but the day he actually died. Nirvana was my favourite band for a lot of years. Still is I guess. Nirvana and Kurt's death were kind of like the birth and death of music for me. Not that I wasn't into music before Nirvana, and not that I stopped listening to it when he died. But Nirvana meant a lot to me and opened my eyes to a whole new genre of music. I remember the first time I saw them play. I think it was 1989. I know it was at the New York Theatre in Vancouver, opening for Sonic Youth. I was a fan before the first song ended. I bought Bleach and Blew and anything else I could get my hands on. The first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit I knew it was going to be huge. Kurt's death was one of the few times I've cried when somebody died. Certainly the only time I cried when a stranger died. Today there have been tributes and coverage on news shows, including Dateline where they talked about "conspiracy theories". Well to me it's more than just a theory that Courtney Love had a hand in his death. Even if it was just getting him hooked on heroin. Not to mention the facts that they were headed for divorce and Kurt was about to retire from music when he died. Courtney's career and financial security were on the line. You know the rest.
